Making Fruit Snacks

Let's be honest, Fruit Snacks = Glorified Candy! There is no nutritional value to them. They are expensive and loaded with sugar and occasionally the manufacturers have the nerve to insult our intelligence by listing "made with real fruit juice." It doesn't matter what shape or form... whether they are sharks, Dora the Explorer or shaped like fruit, they have no nutritional value and are terrible for kids' teeth. Fruit Snacks are baaaaad news!

But kids love fruit snacks. Fruit Snacks keep them quiet and they are an easy snack to hand the kids as they run out the door to play. That is why I make sugar-free fruit snacks for my kids.

Fruit Snack Recipe
2 large packages of sugar-free jello
6 packets unflavored gelatin
1 1/4 cups tap water

Mix all ingredients together in a Pyrex liquid measuring cup. It will be really, really thick and grainy looking. Place measuring cup in small sauce pan of water. Heat over medium-low heat until mixture is liquid and smooth. You are only melting, not cooking the mixture. Pour gelatin mixture into small ice cube trays or candy molds. Refrigerate about 10 minutes and remove from molds. Store in airtight container up to a week and a half.

These are sweet and tangy. According to my husband, they taste more like Jello the first day and as they age they taste more like traditional fruit snacks. They are great both ways!
